The Narwhal is a unique and fascinating species that is truly majestic and beautiful let's dive in. Narwhals are 9.8 feet to 18 feet long they weigh 1,800 to 3,500 pounds. The Narwhals coloration is a blotched pattern is is a dark gray with white blotches. The most known trait of The Narwhal is its tusk that the males mostly posses. The Tusk is actually a canine tooth that is projecting from the left upper jaw. The tusk is 4 feet 11 inches to 9 feet 10 inches. It is hollow and weighs 16 pounds. Male Narwhals tusks have spirals on their tusk. Females rarely grow tusks and when they do it is usually noticeably smaller than males and if they do grow tusks they usually do not have spirals. Narwhals are found in the Arctic ocean, they commonly they are reported in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Hudson bay, Hudson Strait, Baffin bay, Greenland waters, and Russian waters. Narwhals have a seasonal Migration with a high fidelity of return to their icy and Arctic Waters usually shallow waters. When they Migrate they travel in pods between 10 and 100 individuals. Narwhals usually live in pods regularly between 3 and 8 individuals. Some pods may be made up of just mothers and calves this is called a nursery. In the season of summer many groups will form one large pod ranging from 500 individuals to 1,000 individuals. Narwhals eat many different species of fish. They eat Arctic cod, Greenland Halibut, Boreo Atlantic armhook squid, Polar cod, Red fish, Wolffish, Capelin, and skate eggs. Narwhals are sexually mature at the ages between 6 and 8 years. The gestation period lasts about 15 months. Only one single calf is born. Narwhals live 50 years on average, but some individuals live between 84 and 115 years.
