The Red Panda is a fascinating and beautiful species that is fairly popular and recognized. The Red Panda male weighs 9 to 29 pounds, while the females weigh 8.8 to 33.1 pounds. The Red Panda's body length is 24 to 26 inches long. Its tail length adds 19 inches! The Red Panda lives in Nepal, Eastern Bengal, Bhutan, India, China, Southern Tibet, Myanmar. They live in the Himalayas where the temperatures between 64 and 75 degrees fahrenheit. Red Pandas live alone which means they are solitary the only time they can be seen together is during mating season. The Red Panda is primarily herbivorous. They mainly feed on bamboo, but they have been seen eating acorns, blossoms, eggs, birds, fruit, and small mammals. It will also eat certain flowers. When a Red Panda is eating bamboo it will grab the leaf from the bamboo stalk and pull it off with its cheek teeth. Many different vocalizations such as grunts, barks, hoots, squeals, and twitters. The mating season of the Red Panda typically lasts between the months of January and March. After a gestation period of 131 days females find a small cave or crevice like a log or a stump and give birth to one to four cubs. The cubs that are born are fully furred, but are born blind. Mothers and cubs form a bond that lasts from the original mating season to the next mating season. Cubs separate from their mothers between the ages of 7 and 8 months. Red pandas have few predators including leopards, jackals, and rarely Martens. A Red Pandas lifespan can extend up to 14 years in captivity, but in the wild 8 to 10 years is a more appropriate estimation for individuals in the wild.
