The Common Ostrich is a beautiful, large, and incredible bird that is known all around the world. The male Ostrich weighs 220 pounds to 290 pounds, while females weigh 200 pounds to 260 pounds. Males are between 6 and 9 feet tall whereas females stand between 5 feet 9 inches tall to 6 feet 3 inches. From beak to tail the ostrich is between 6 and 9 feet long. They are found in sub Saharan Africa. They inhabit savannas, grasslands, and semi deserts. The Common Ostrich is an omnivore they feed on many different animals and plants. They eat shrubs, seeds, flowers, grass, fruit, locusts, small rodents like mice, small reptiles, such as lizards, they also will occasionally scavenge on animal remains left by carnivorous animals. Females become sexually mature between the ages of 2 and 4. Mating season starts in March and ends in April. They lay 7 to 10 eggs in a clutch. Being a flightless bird in Africa they face many challenges and predators. Predators that prey on ostriches include cheetahs, lions, leopards, African wild dogs, spotted hyenas. Predators that mostly prey on younger ostriches or eggs include Jackals, various birds of prey, mongooses, warthogs, and Egyptian vultures. Though they face many Predators and dangers they have adapted to foraging with other ostriches, wildebeests, zebras, and other mammals to discover dangers and predators more efficiently. If they are In danger they will kick the Intruder or predator. They will not bury their heads in the sand that is just a misidentification. As you can see the Ostrich is an amazing animal I hope you enjoyed learning about the Common Ostrich.
