The Bontebok is an ungulate (meaning it is a hoofed animal) and is an extraordinary animal that fought from extinction and is now thriving. The Bontebok is a tall medium sized antelope that is brown with a white streak going down its head. They are 39 inches tall at shoulder between 47 to 83 inches along the head and body. There weight can vary from 342 Lbs to 110 Lbs. The Bontebok is not a solitary animal and herds can be made up of just males , just females, or mixed. They eat fresh short grasses and a variety over other plants. Unlike many other animals bonteboks are not good jumpers, but instead they are excellent at crawling under things. Bonteboks were once killed as pests and the killing of this magnificent creature and in the early 20th century the population down to as low as 17 individuals. Now the population is between 2,500 - 3,000. The Bontebok live in the coastal Fynbos and and Renosterveld.
