The Aardwolf is a small member of Hyaenidae that is different than all the other members in the family due to Its diet let's dive In. The Aardwolf weighs 15 to 22 pounds. Though sometimes, but not often they can reach up to 33 pounds which is pretty large for an animal that size. They are 22 to 31 inches long and 16 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder. The Aardwolf has a thin muzzle and a coat with stripes. Aardwolves live in Africa. The Aardwolf can be found in bushland, grasslands, savannas, and farmland. The Aardwolf is incredibly shy and is nocturnal. They rest in burrows during the day. On occasion in the winter they will almost become diurnal, so they can conserve heat during the night when temperatures drop. The dens that Aardwolves use are usually abandoned by Aardvarks, Porcupines, Or Springhares. The main thing that makes the Aardwolf like no other in its family is its diet. The Aardwolf's diet is incredibly unique because instead of feeding on large prey like impalas it is mainly an insectivore! They mainly feed on termites . Instead of digging in the mound or destroying it like Aardvarks do they prefer to lick the termites out. When the termites are less abundant in the winter they will feed on the African Harvester termite. They usually memorize the location of the termite mound so then they can return throughout the month. They are also known to feed on other insects and larvae. They also ver rarely and occasionally will eat small mammals and birds. An adult Aardwolf may consume up to 250,000 ants a night when they hunt.Aardwolf mating season is in between the seasons autumn and spring. They will give birth to 2 to 5 cubs but generally they have 2 to 3 cubs. The first six to eight weeks of being born they spend in the den with their parents. The Male. may spend up to six hours a night watching the cubs while the female hunts. I hope you enjoyed learning about the unique Aardwolf.
